Self-drilling screws for cladding: when should you use them and when shouldn't you?

Selecting the correct fixing is an important part of any cladding installation. One of the most common questions contractors ask is whether a self-drilling screw or a self-tapping screw is the right choice for the job.  

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference can help improve installation efficiency, achieve a more secure fixing and avoid damaging either the fixing or the substrate.  

The right choice depends on the material you're fixing into, whether a pilot hole has already been created and the requirements of the cladding system.  

Self tapping vs self drilling: what's the difference?

The simplest way to understand the difference is to look at what each screw is designed to do.

  • self-drilling screw has a drill point that acts like a miniature drill bit. As the screw is driven into the material, it creates its own hole before cutting its own thread.
  • self-tapping screw creates its own thread, but it does not usually drill its own hole. In most applications, a pilot hole is drilled first, after which the screw cuts or forms a thread as it is installed.

In other words, every self-drilling screw is also self-tapping because it forms its own thread, but not every self-tapping screw is self-drilling.

What is a self-drilling screw?

A self-drilling screw combines drilling and fastening into a single operation.

The drill point is designed to penetrate the substrate before the threaded section engages with the material. This removes the need for a separate drilling stage in many metal-to-metal applications.

Self-drilling screws are commonly used where speed, consistency and productivity are important, particularly on larger commercial projects.

When are self-drilling screws used in cladding?

Self-drilling screws are widely used for fixing cladding systems into steel and other metal substructures.

Typical applications include:

  • Metal cladding systems
  • Rainscreen support systems
  • Steel framing
  • Purlins and rails
  • Secondary steelwork

Because drilling and fastening are completed in a single operation, installation is often quicker than using separately drilled pilot holes. The suitability of a particular screw depends on factors including the substrate thickness, material grade and the manufacturer's recommended drilling capacity.

What are the advantages of self-drilling screws?

For many cladding installations, self-drilling screws offer practical advantages. They reduce the number of installation steps because drilling and fastening are completed simultaneously. This can improve productivity, particularly on larger projects where thousands of fixings may be required.

Other benefits include:

  • Faster installation
  • Fewer tools required
  • Reduced handling time
  • Consistent fixing positions
  • Efficient installation into suitable steel sections

As with any fixing, these advantages depend on using the correct screw for the application.

When shouldn't you use self-drilling screws?

Although self-drilling screws are versatile, they are not suitable for every installation. They should not be viewed as a universal solution simply because they eliminate the need for pre-drilling.

There are situations where a pre-drilled fixing method may be more appropriate, including where:

  • The cladding system specifically requires pre-drilled holes
  • The substrate exceeds the screw's drilling capacity
  • The material could be damaged by drilling directly
  • Precise hole positioning is critical
  • The fixing manufacturer specifies an alternative installation method

Following the project specification should always take precedence over convenience.

When is a pre-drilled fixing method preferable?

Some cladding materials benefit from carefully controlled hole preparation before the fixing is installed.

For example, certain façade systems require oversized or slotted holes to accommodate thermal movement. In these situations, pre-drilling ensures the hole dimensions are produced accurately before the fixing is installed.

Pre-drilling may also be appropriate when fixing into thicker structural steel or specialist materials where the selected fixing is not designed to drill through the substrate.

The installation method should always follow the tested façade system and fixing manufacturer's recommendations.

Does a self-drilling screw need a pilot hole?

In normal applications, no. A self-drilling screw is specifically designed to eliminate the need for a separate pilot hole by drilling its own entry point before forming the thread. However, some specialist installations or manufacturer-approved details may still require pilot holes depending on the substrate or fixing arrangement.

Does substrate thickness matter?

Yes. Every self-drilling screw is manufactured with a maximum drilling capacity. This indicates the range of material thicknesses the drill point has been designed to penetrate effectively.

Attempting to install a screw beyond its rated drilling capacity can lead to excessive wear of the drill point, increased installation time or unsuccessful fixing.

Selecting the correct drill point for the steel thickness is therefore just as important as selecting the correct screw diameter or length.

Choosing the right screw for your project

Selecting between self-drilling and pre-drilled fixing methods is not simply a matter of speed. The substrate, cladding material, movement requirements, environmental exposure and project specification all influence which approach is most appropriate.

Understanding the purpose of each fixing method helps ensure the completed installation performs as intended while meeting the requirements of the façade system.
