What James Hardie® Panels Are Available?

James Hardie® manufacture a range of high-performance fibre cement and HPL rainscreen panels for commercial and residential façade projects. Their panels are widely specified for their durability, weather resistance and the extensive color and finish range available. Two panel thicknesses are covered by the fixings on this page: 8mm and 11mm, and the correct fixing in each case depends on both panel thickness and subframe material. Always refer to your James Hardie® installation guide before ordering.

Which Rivet Do I need For My James Hardie® Panel?

James Hardie® specifies aluminium/stainless large flange dome head rivets for face-fixing panels to aluminium subframes. Two sizes are available depending on your panel thickness:

  • 8mm James Hardie® panels - 5 x 18 x 14mm rivet for face-fixing to aluminium substructures.
  • 11mm James Hardie® panels - 5 x 25 x 16mm rivet for face-fixing to aluminium substructures.

Both rivets are available unpainted or color-matched in Standard, Gloss, Woodgrain, Metallic or Chameleon finishes.

Which Screws Are Specified For James Hardie® Panels?

James Hardie® panels can be fixed using screws into timber or steel subframes. Two screw types are available depending on your subframe:

  • A2 stainless steel low profile screws: 4.8 x 38 x 12mm for face-fixing James Hardie® HPL and fibre cement panels to timber substructures.
  • Bi-metallic self-drilling low profile screws: 5.5 x 35 x 12mm for face-fixing 11mm James Hardie® HPL and fibre cement panels to steel substructures with a minimum gauge of 1.2mm. The hardened carbon steel drill tip cuts through steel sections that a stainless steel tip cannot handle; the stainless steel head provides corrosion resistance at the panel face.

All screws can be color-matched to your panel finish. Only the head is painted; the thread stays bare, so it drives cleanly into the subframe.

What Installation Tools Do I Need?

Three tools are needed for a correct James Hardie® rivet installation:

  • Centralising drilling tool: 8.5 x 5.1mm - for metal subframes, this tool produces concentric 9mm sliding point holes with a 5.1mm fixed point drill bit. Replacement 5.1mm drill bits are available separately.
  • Carbide drill bits: available in 5.1 x 26mm and 9mm x 40mm for drilling through fibre cement and HPL panels. Carbide is required. Do not use HSS bits on these materials as they will not hold tolerance and may crack the panel face.
  • Rivet setting nose pieces: two versions available, one for each rivet size. Both ensure the rivet is set exactly 0.3mm away from the panel face, the gap James Hardie® requires to allow for panel thermal movement.

If you want everything in one order, the James Hardie® Panel Installation Kit bundles centralising tools, nose pieces and drill bits.

Can My James Hardie® Fixings be color-Matched?

Every rivet and screw in this range can be factory painted to match your James Hardie® panel finish exactly, whether that is a standard RAL or BS color, a woodgrain finish or a bespoke paint-to-sample match. The match is guaranteed. 25-year coating warranty on all painted fixings.

Want to check the color match first? We offer free sample packs that can be posted worldwide.
